Patient Antibiotic Guidelines for Dental Procedures

Little evidence exists on the use of antibiotics to prevent infection before dental procedures in patients with orthopedic implants, and the topic remains controversial.  In general, multiple factors are taken into account.

Reverse shoulder arthroplasty replacemen prosthesis

Antibiotics are generally recommended if:

  • Your dental procedure involves manipulation of the gingival or periapical tissues.  A regular "cleaning" does not require this.

  • You are immunocompromised (HIV, Hepatitis C, Diabetes, medications for auto-immune conditions)

  • Your joint replacement surgery was within the last year

Antibiotics are generally not recommended if:

  • Your dental procedure does not involve manipulation of the gingival or periapical tissues.

  • You are healthy without any significant medical diagnoses

  • Your joint replacement surgery was more than one year ago
